Unser Burgerbrau Suffikator

Suffikator is a German double bock (doppelbock) with a strength of 6.8%, brewed by the Unser Burgerbrau brewery, Bavaria. The tradition of giving doppelbock beers names ending in "-ator" comes from the original doppelbock, called Salvator. This is actually a Paulaner beer, and mean “saviour” in Latin.

It is interesting that the term “Salvator” became a generic name for German double bocks until the year 1894, when Paulaner bought a trade mark on the name. Since then the style has become known as doppelbock because it is similar to a regular bock, but produced with twice the malt (and generally twice the amount of fermentable ingredients).

Although not the original doppelbock, Unser Burgerbrau Suffikator is a great bock, with a full malt taste which is well balanced by an abundance of hop character. The hops lend it a dry, bitter aftertaste. It also boasts a bouquet of fresh grains.

Fuller's ESB

The ESB beer style is almost entirely dominated by the English market, although the USA does make brew tasty examples. ESB is abbreviated from Extra Special Bitter, although the S can also stand for Strong. Indeed, they tend to be a little stronger in alcohol than normal English bitters (about 4.5% to 5.5% ABV), although their defining character is expert balance, despite very accentuated malt and hops.

I have tasted 237 different ESBs so far, the best one being Ventnor brewery's Hop & Glory, which went down a treat and is one of the best English beers I've found to date. ESBs tends to be a little darker than ordinary bitters, and despite the word "bitter", the hop bitterness tends not to dominate at all. There is little carbonation to these beers, and there tends to be a pleasant toasty malt character.

old Burton-on-Trent street and pub

We do not know what your thoughts and opinions are on the situation, but we live a busy life. We are constantly always doing something. We are either at work or dealing with family issues. Whenever we have some time off of work, we like to go out with our family and enjoy a relaxing vacation. During those times, we especially enjoy going to Burton-on-Trent. We must say that Burton-on-Trent is a wonderful part of town that you can go in order to enjoy a relaxing vacation. Many refer to this town as Burton for short. This is a large town that is sitting on the River Trent to the east of Staffordshire, which is in England. As we write this article, we would like to share some interesting facts with you.

Burton is very popular for the brewing heritage that it has. Burton's great bridge that was going over the river Trent was not in good condition during the 1500's, but it served as a passage to and from many countries.

The population of this town is outstanding. During the 2001 Census, it showed a total population of 54, 348 people.

This town is also sitting within the National Forest, which adds even more beauty to it. There is confusions to the matter asking is Burton is based in the East Midlands or in the West Midlands. The Burton-on-Trent railway station is serving this town.

The quality of the local water has high proportions of dissolved salts, which is why it is associated as being a brewing industry. In turns, this allows for a larger proportion of hops, which is a natural preservative to be included in the alcohol. This also allows the beer to be shipped further away. The open land around and within the town is protected from chemical treatment in order to preserve the quality of the water.

famous English beers

I have had far more English beers than from any other country - almost 3000 now. I present here the Top 200 Chart. The most common style of English beer is the "bitter". Although several other countries attempt to brew bitters, you can only find genuine examples right here in England. We also brew several other distinctive examples, such as the English barley wine (very thick!), pale ales, old ales, ciders, and several others. The best I've found so far is the 2006 vintage of JW Lees Harvest Ale, brewed in Manchester. Here are my best 200 English beers so far. Enjoy!

a pub in Essex

A fine example of the quality of pubs that can be found in Essex is the winner of the 'Best Traditional Pub' Award at the Essex Food & Drinks Awards 2008, The Axe & Compasses in Aythorpe Roding, Dunmow.

Whether enjoying a home cooked meal, attending one of the numerous special events or just sampling one of the many guest ales, you can relax and enjoy stunning views of the Essex countryside at the Grade 2 listed 17th Century pub. Run by a dedicated Husband and Wife team, whether a regular or first time visitor, you can be sure of a warm welcome.

Approximately 20 minutes from Chelmsford and with garden areas catering for adults and children alike, The Axe & Compasses is without doubt one of the finest Pubs in Essex.

Situated not far from Dunmow in the nearby town of Margaretting, just off the A12, is their sister pub The Red Lion. A 17th Century 'Olde Worlde' pub that plays host to events throughout the year such as Traditional Folk Music and Dancing to various Car Shows.

If the Essex coast is more to your liking, why not pay The Victory, on Mersea Island a visit. Awarded 4 Star Inn Status by Visit Britain, the name as it suggests is in reference to Lord Nelson's famous warship 'HMS Victory'.

Located close to the oldest part of Mersea with unspoilt views over the Blackwater, you will find the pub not only offers a relaxed and friendly atmosphere to eat or drink, but also has accommodation available should you wish to stay and explore the Island.

As well as traditional, there is also a wide variety of modern gastro style Pubs in Essex, which appear to be becoming far more fashionable by specialising in food and wine a cut above that offered by your more typical public house.

A fine example of this type of establishment would be The Alma Bar & Restaurant, situated in the town of Chelmsford. Serving high quality food, real ales and fine wines secured their entry into the AA Pub Guide and also the prestigious Michelin Good Pub Guide.

With a wide enough variety of Pubs in Essex to suit most tastes and the majority being within easy travelling distance, whether you are a local or visiting our county for the first time you will find Essex hard to beat for its quality of pubs.

Augustiner Edelstoff

Augustiner is a German dortmunder export-style beer with a strength of 5.6%, brewed by the Augistiner brewery in the city of Munich. In the early 19th century, Napoleon abolished many of the country’s monasteries, and the monastery that was the original site of the Augustiner brewery was no exception. However, the tradition of monastic brewing was not dissolved. The Edelstoff brewery moved to its present site in 1817.

There are only six breweries that are permitted to brew beer to the famous (infamous?) Munich Oktoberfest, and Augustiner is one of them. Talking about this festival, it originates from the marriage of King Ludwig I of Bavaria to Princess Theresa, and because of the strict rules surrounding the official festival, not even Prince Luitpold, a direct descendant of King Ludwig, is allowed to sell his beers there. This tradition only applies to the main festival, however, and there are many smaller beer festival around Munich at the same time, in which other breweries can and do participate.

In addition to their Oktoberfest and Edelstoff varieties, Augustiner brews a crisp pale pilsner that has a malty, smooth feel about it, a dunkel lager with a an aromatic spicy taste, and a warming abbey-style double bock called Maximator, brewed for the cold winter months.

DETAILS
Brewery: Augustiner Brau
Brewed at: Munich, Bavaria
Beer style: Dortmunder
Appearance: golden
Strength: 5.6% ABV

a London real ale pub

A city as culturally rich and diverse as London is bound to have a great number of historical pubs and buildings sprinkled throughout its centre, from the East End alleyways to Oxford Circus. And with real ale breweries still standing tall against the tyranny of fizzy lager and alcopops, there's never been a better time to sample the delights of Ye Olde London. But with so many establishments going for that 'authentic' look, how can one distinguish the genuine from the impostors? With this small guide, that's how. Of course, there are too many good old fashioned ale houses to possibly mention, so here's a shortlist of my favourites in no particular order. All of these alehouses can be visited in a single day. I'll try to keep the history lessons to a minimum.

The Black Friar

The Friar is a most peculiar tall wedge-shaped oddity, largely famous for the statue of a laughing monk that hangs above the main door. This delightfully bizarre Victorian building, built upon the site of a 13th century Dominican priory is host to an even more elaborate interior, decked out with illustrations and bronze reliefs of monks, and brilliant stained glass.

(Mon-Sat 11.30-23.00, Sun 12-22.30, nearest tube Blackfriars)

Old Cheshire Cheese

Entering the Old Cheshire Cheese is like walking through the wardrobe into Narnia. Best avoided by those suffering from claustrophobia, or the freakishly tall, it is easy to get lost in this dimly lit, low level maze of various rooms and restaurants. A cosy open fire greets visitors into a room that has been host to the likes of Charles Dickens and Samuel Johnson.

(Mon-Sat 11.30-23.00, Sun, 12-15.00, Wine Office Court near Fleet Street, nearest tube Blackfriars)

Seven Stars

One of the few buildings on this list to have survived the Great Fire of London, the Seven Stars is a surreal, narrow little bar is usually packed with lawyers and the likes. The meals, though relatively pricey, are as good and plentiful as pub food can possibly get. Rather cramped, but all the more atmospheric for it, the pub is smothered in antiquities and old artwork. The Seven Stars most unusual regular is Tom Paine, a large black cat in a white ruffled collar who sits atop the bar like he owns the joint. I wouldn't mess with him.

(Mon-Sat 11.00-23.00, Carey Street nr Lincoln's inn fields nearest tube Holborn)

Ye Olde Mitre

Discreetly tucked away in a small alley just off Ely Place, this Elizabethan alehouse has an old-world feel like no other, with both the exterior and exterior of the pub left mostly intact. The bar staff, decked in traditional attire, bow ties and aprons are the friendliest around. Despite its location and size, the Mitre does get very busy, so expect to stand. Men, be prepared to queue for the single toilet cubicle outside, though there is a woman's restroom inside.

(Mon-Fri 11.00-23.00, Ely Court, Ely Place, nearest tube Chancery Lane)

Cittie of York

The Cittie was demolished and rebuilt in 1890 though parts of the original building still remain, and the cellar has been converted into a quirky, if somewhat white, downstairs bar. A good place for a quick lunch, there is a series of triangular coal fires that keep it nice and cosy during the winter. Some find the interior a little too standardized and manufactured. Usually full of office workers during the day and early evening.

(Mon-Sat 11.00-23.00, 22 High Holborn, nearest tube Chancery Lane)

Princess Louise

The interior of the Princess Louise, unlike many of its competitors, has been left pretty much intact from a, then modern, refurbishment back in 1891. Richly furnished in Victorian glasswork and ornate plasterwork and tiling, this bar is understandably one of the most popular historical pubs in London, and appeals to a very mixed crowd.

(Mon-Fri 11.00-23.00, Sat 12.00-23.00, 208-9 High Holborn nearest tube Holborn)

Punch Tavern

As much a restaurant as a pub, this recently refurbished bar may seem a little too modern for some tastes. A good place to stop off at for some decent quality food at a reasonable price. Situated along Fleet Street, the punch is an easy find, and can get very busy.

(Mon-Fri 11.30-23.00, Sat 11.30-18.00, Sun 12-15.00&19.00-22.30, 99 Fleet Street, nearest tube Blackfriars)

Salisbury

The Salisbury's lavish light fittings and etched glass interior really come to life when lit up in the evening, as does the pub itself which is bustling from the late afternoon onwards. During the day it is more of a quiet restaurant. Filled with nymphs and cherubs, this is one of the better traditional style Soho bars.

(Mon-Sat 11.00-22.30, Sun 12.00-23.00, 90 St Martins Lane, nearest tube Leicester Square)

Dog & Duck

A very small little Soho pub, the Dog & Duck attracts big street crowds during the warmer seasons. Covered wall to wall in original Victorian tiles and mirrors the interior is a sight to see, if you manage to squeeze in that far.

(Mon-Fri 12.00-23.00, Sat 18.00-23.00, Sun 19.00-22.30, Frith St/ Bateman Street, nearest tube Tottenham Court Rd)

Lamb & Flag

Just off from Covent Garden, the Lamb & Flag is a popular pub and lunchtime restaurant. Has a slightly standardized feel to it and does tend to pull in the tourists due to its location, but is slightly more spacious than many other historical alehouses. Nicely tucked away from the tourist ridden Covent Gardens, the Lamb 7 Flag is a good place for a breather.

(Mon-Thurs11.00-23.00, Fri-Sat 11.00-22.45, Sun 12.00-22.30, 33 Rose St, nearest tube Covent Garden)

Argyll Arms

This Victorian pub is still divided into three sections, still unchanged from the days of class separation, and is one of the few places to have kept such an interior intact. These carved wooden partitions, with decorative interior windows are indeed stunning, but can make the place seemed cramped during its busy hours, which is pretty much all day long.

(Mon-Sat 11.00-23.00, Sun 12.00-21.30, 18 Argyle St, nearest tube Oxford Circus)
